Dropping Out of High School – Perhaps I Should Have Done Things Differently
In this, my last semester of college, I cannot help but reflect on the past several years. Here I am, stuck as a history major with a minor in French. I started out as a music education major, proceeded to sociology, dabbled in education, chuckled at political science, and took up history because nothing else was left. As for French, quite simply, Spanish and German were full.
It didn’t have to be this way. Had I started college sooner, I probably would’ve majored in computer science or engineering. I could’ve dropped out of high school at 16, gotten my GED, and graduated college by the time I was 20. Even though I knew I was going to go to an in-state public university, I continued to pile on difficult classes, and press on for two more years. Why did I keep going? Because I didn’t realize that dropping out was actually a viable option.
I was ready for college and independence at 16. In fact, high school was so mind-numbing that, by the time I was 18, I had actually become less mature than when I was 16. Again, I’m not sure what my major would’ve ended up being, but I can’t help but wonder.
Why does our society insist that everybody fit the same mold? Take advice from your elders, but find your own truth! Even your parents may be stuck in the memories of their own situations. Never stop searching for a better way – there usually is one.
I’m incensed at the USA education system at the moment, so expect a few more of these.
