Screw Experience: 5 Reasons Young People Should Be Hired Anyway

productivityAre you tired of finally finding a job that seems to have everything you want only to have to give up because you don’t have 3-5 years experience operating sandpaper?

Experience simply doesn’t mean very much if you have already shown you can learn quickly. Think of all the things you have that older workers do not:

1. Little to no obligation.

Most of you don’t have kids yet. A few of you are married, but until you have kids you really don’t have much, if anything, to worry about.

2. Willingness to be worked like a dog.

I don’t know if employers got the memo, but take a look at professional athletes. Which ones produce the most, the ones in their late-30s or mid-20s?

When you get a job that pays us enough, you KILL yourself to earn both pay and approval. Somebody who has already been through the mill may know HOW to do the job instantly, but whether or not they do it with vigor is unknown. (Besides, why did they leave their last job where they got soooo much experience? [I know some get laid-off, but that is an exception.])

3. Lower salary requirements.

You’re willing to be an illegal immigrant. If your boss lets you sneak under his office door, you’ll take what you can get.

4. Less conflict with management.

You may not have experience, but you are well aware of that! When bosses hire people with loads of experience, they are just begging to butt heads. You just do what you’re told!

5. New ideas.

Every generation thinks a little differently. A company benefits from having a wide-range of ages. Think how each generation might think about advertising.

  • A 60-year-old might say “mail our ad to the newspaper.”
  • The 40-year-old might say “call the yellow pages.”
  • The 20-year-old, however, might say “allow me to set up a search marketing account on Google so people see us immediately every time they search for something relevant.”

It’s something worth thinking about, and I really hope that employers come around.
