I Like Bach, So I’m Smart

Did you ever notice how your interests say a lot about who you are or desire to be?
Most of us remember the pressure to like and dislike certain things. I remember when I bought Eminem’s first CD 10 years ago. I was convinced for whatever reason he was by far the best musician I had ever heard…I later realized I had allowed myself to be influenced by my peers. As a result, I was able to delude myself.
Take a look at a list of your interests/preferences on Myspace, Facebook, or wherever else you may have one. How many of these are based on who you really are? How many are based on what you wish you were or what you are trying to become? How many of these are a result of you wanting to please your parents or friends?
The title of this article is based on the premise that people who like classical music are intelligent. My dilemma is whether or not people actually like Bach or they just want people to think “Oh, they like Bach. They must be intelligent.”
What intrigues me the most is trying to figure out if I, an avid, overt lover of classical music, do this myself…
